Details

In collaboration with the Corrosion Institute of the United Kingdom, the Society for Materials Engineering announces to its members and those interested in materials engineering its first scientific training course, “Fundamentals of Corrosion Engineering,” which will be launched from October 5 to 9, 2025.

Participants in this scientific course will receive a comprehensive introduction to all key aspects of corrosion engineering, with practical examples and applications for preventing and reducing corrosion in most industrial sectors, such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and other industrial applications.

This course is suitable for engineers, inspectors, designers, and industrial technicians who wish to expand their professional horizons in the field of corrosion and expand or update their knowledge of corrosion in general.

Civil, mechanical, chemical, and marine engineers will find that this course enhances their ability to assess potential or actual corrosion conditions and enables them to integrate corrosion control measures and strategies into their projects. It will also help them understand the mechanisms and causes of common premature failures. The course is held over five days; four days are dedicated to lectures and practical sessions, and the fifth day is dedicated to a brief review and examination. Questions will be asked throughout the course. The course covers the following corrosion topics:

1. Corrosion of common metals.

2. Fundamentals of corrosion science.

3. Common corrosion mechanisms: galvanic, crevice, spot corrosion, precipitation, and sub-precipitation corrosion.

4. The electrochemical series and its practical uses.

5. Corrosion prevention and management methods, including inhibitors/passivations.

6. Introduction to cathodic protection.

7. Challenges of surface preparation, paints, and coatings.

8. Corrosion and environmental conditions.

9. Material selection and design.

10. Corrosion Testing and Monitoring

The course will be delivered by Dr. Jane Lomas from the Corrosion Institute in the UK. Dr. Jane is an experienced corrosion and coatings engineer with over 30 years of practical experience and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Corrosion Institute and a member of the Council of the Corrosion Institute in the UK.
